Czech diacritics are part of the word

Czech uses marks above and below its letters that change which word it is rather than only how it sounds. Stripping them, as some older subtitle tooling and a few upload pipelines still do, produces text that is wrong rather than merely plain.

Open the exported file once and confirm the marks survived before you rely on a workflow. If they did not, the problem is almost always an encoding setting rather than the Czech text itself.

How Hungarian audio becomes Czech subtitles

Audio in Hungarian (Magyar) is transcribed first, then translated into Czech (Čeština). Because the translation runs on the transcript rather than on the audio, the Czech subtitle file keeps the timings of the original Hungarian speech — each line appears at the moment it was actually said.

Searching a Hungarian transcript

Hungarian is heavily inflected, so the same term appears in a range of forms rather than repeating identically. That is correct output, but it means searching the transcript for a keyword will miss most of its occurrences unless you search for the stem.

It matters here because the Czech translation collapses much of that variation, and the two files will not line up term for term even though they line up line for line.

Why translate Hungarian video into Czech

Hungarian is spoken principally in Hungary and neighbouring communities; Czech in Czechia. A Czech subtitle track is what lets one recording reach both audiences without re-recording, re-editing or dubbing it.

Because subtitles are a separate file rather than part of the picture, you can attach several language tracks to the same video and let viewers pick.

About the Hungarian audio

Hungarian is agglutinative and heavily cased, so what English needs a short phrase for arrives as a single long word with endings stacked on it. Vowel harmony means those endings change shape to match the word they attach to, and a transcript will show the same suffix in several forms.

About the Czech subtitles

Czech permits syllables built entirely from consonants, so a run of letters with no vowel in it is usually correct rather than a dropped character. The everyday spoken register differs from the written standard in its endings, and transcription follows what was said rather than correcting it upward.

What to check before publishing

• Names and places, which translation handles less reliably than ordinary prose.
• Idiom — a phrase that is natural in Hungarian may need loosening to read well in Czech.
• That Czech diacritics survived the export — they change the word, not just its pronunciation.
• Timing on fast exchanges, where two speakers overlap.
