How English audio becomes Maltese subtitles

Maltese is the one Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet: the grammar and core vocabulary are Arabic in origin while much of the rest is borrowed from Italian and English. Speakers switch into English constantly, and that is transcribed as spoken rather than translated back.

What to check before publishing

• Names and places, which translation handles less reliably than ordinary prose.
• Idiom — a phrase that is natural in English may need loosening to read well in Maltese.
• Timing on fast exchanges, where two speakers overlap.
