Choosing between Malay and Indonesian

Malay and Indonesian are close enough that automatic detection between them is unreliable, especially on short clips — there is simply not enough audio to tell them apart. Set both languages explicitly here rather than leaving the source on detection.

Because the two are so close, translation between them is largely a matter of vocabulary and written convention rather than restructuring sentences. Expect a Indonesian subtitle file that tracks the Malay original almost line for line.

How Malay audio becomes Indonesian subtitles

Audio in Malay (Bahasa Melayu) is transcribed first, then translated into Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia). Because the translation runs on the transcript rather than on the audio, the Indonesian subtitle file keeps the timings of the original Malay speech — each line appears at the moment it was actually said.

Why translate Malay video into Indonesian

Malay is spoken principally in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore; Indonesian in Indonesia. A Indonesian subtitle track is what lets one recording reach both audiences without re-recording, re-editing or dubbing it.

Because subtitles are a separate file rather than part of the picture, you can attach several language tracks to the same video and let viewers pick.

About the Malay audio

Malay and Indonesian are close relatives and largely mutually intelligible, but they diverge in everyday vocabulary — choosing the wrong one gives output that reads slightly off rather than obviously wrong. Malay is the right choice for Malaysian, Bruneian and Singaporean material.

About the Indonesian subtitles

Formal Indonesian and the colloquial Jakarta register differ enough that the same speaker will shift between them depending on audience. Both transcribe; neither is normalised toward the other.

What to check before publishing

• Names and places, which translation handles less reliably than ordinary prose.
• Idiom — a phrase that is natural in Malay may need loosening to read well in Indonesian.
• Timing on fast exchanges, where two speakers overlap.
